Common Warning Signs of Engine Trouble

Common Warning Signs of Engine Trouble

It's important to be proactive about getting to the shop when you first notice a symptom of engine trouble. If you delay, the problem could soon escalate and end up costing much more to repair than should've been necessary. At Jerry's Auto Repair, our local mechanics are experts at diagnosing and fixing engine trouble. Come and see us if you notice any of the following warning signs of an engine problem.

The Check Engine Light

If your check engine light turns on, you don't want to ignore it. While an illuminated check engine light doesn't necessarily indicate that an engine disaster is brewing, it's best to play it safe and get to the shop for diagnostics. Common reasons the check engine light turns on are problems with catalytic converters, mass airflow sensors, and O2 sensors.

Common Symptoms of an Engine Problem

If you hear concerning sounds emerging from your engine, then it'll be best to have a mechanic take a look. A tapping noise could mean that you're driving with a dangerously low oil level, and that the sound is emerging because of insufficient lubrication. This could put your engine's moving parts at risk of major damage due to metal-on-metal contact. A variety of engine problems can cause a knocking noise, with one possibility being that you're driving with a lean air/fuel mixture. Bad rod bearings can also lead to a knock. If you hear a knocking sound coming from your engine, you'll definitely want to get it checked out.

You'll also want to keep an eye out for discolored exhaust smoke. Blue-tinted smoke suggests an oil leak. Black smoke is a sign that your engine is burning too much fuel. White smoke is an indication of an internal coolant leak, and could mean that you have a blown head gasket.

Power loss is another cause for concern. If you drive an old car with high miles, it's not automatically a red flag if a little power has been lost over the years. But a sudden loss of a lot of power could mean a serious problem, such as worn-out pistons.
